Formed in Umeå, Sweden in 1991 by vocalist Dennis Lyxzén, drummer David Sandström, and guitarist Kristofer Steen. Emerging from Sweden's militant vegan straight-edge hardcore scene ('Songs to Fan the Flames of Discontent'), Refused unleashed their 1998 masterpiece 'The Shape of Punk to Come'—breaking up in an Atlanta basement weeks later before becoming one of the most influential post-hardcore records of the 21st century.

The ultimate creative bridge between 1980s NYHC Youth Crew and 1990s post-hardcore. After playing bass in Youth of Today and writing Gorilla Biscuits' landmark 'Start Today' LP at age 19, Walter fronted Quicksand ('Slip', 1993) and Rival Schools ('United by Fate', 2001), reshaping heavy melodic rock.
